Why are cows being played jazz music?
British farmers have started playing classical and jazz music to their cows to improve the quality of their milk.
Charles Godby, a farmer from Nuneaton, has been playing radio music to his cows for about a decade.
Godby said that music, according to Pavlov's dog theory, mentally and physically prepares cows for milking.
A new kind of music has begun to resonate in the green fields of Britain.
Farms that used to be filled with birdsong and the sound of tractors are now filled with a slightly different melody. Some farmers have started playing music to their cattle with the aim of improving the quality of their milk.
This trend is very viral on TikTok. Such videos have received millions of views. Charles Godby, a dairy farmer living in Nuneaton, UK, has also adopted this new method. He explained why playing music to cows can also benefit others.
When did this trend start?
This practice has recently come into the spotlight after it went viral on TikTok. However, Godby said that he started listening to the radio to cows about a decade ago.
“We had installed a robotic milking machine. It made a very loud and harsh sound. We wanted to reduce that sound and give the cows the same sound continuously,” he said, “This was about 10 years ago. At that time, someone said that cows like classical music. That was the trend at that time. So
I installed a classical radio station for the cows to listen to, which gave the cows a little rest.”
Although jazz music is now the talk of the town, Godby said that he has been using various types of music and radio to listen to cows for years.
‘Pavlov’s Dog’ Theory
Although Godby initially played music to calm the cows, it is estimated that it can also help in milk production. According to the farmer, according to the theory based on Pavlov’s dog, music can mentally and physically prepare the cows for milking.
In this famous experiment, dogs were trained to associate food with the sound of a bell.
Later, the dogs would salivate when they heard the bell. This showed that they had not only mentally associated the sound with food, but also physically.
“We always play music in the milking parlor,” said Godby. “It’s like Pavlov’s dog theory. It wakes up their nerves. It starts producing hormones. And the cows give milk faster. It relaxes both the cow and the worker. So it’s beneficial for everyone.”
What music do cows like?
According to Godby, when this tradition began, farmers used to play classical music to their cows. However, according to the latest trend, jazz music has started to be played on farms across the UK.
Godby said that cows respond to any music. “I think if you go to the edge of the field and play whatever music you see on this TikTok, the cows will come,” he said. “They’re curious to see what’s going on. I think as long as you don’t do anything scary, they’ll come and see.”
Rob Hadley, another farmer in the area, isn’t sure whether cows respond well to other types of music.
“They’re very calm to jazz. But they’ll probably like any music. Maybe a little bit of Ozzy Osbourne,” he said. “They’re actually scared of Ozzy Osbourne’s music.”
Why did TikTok go so viral?
Videos of animals are very popular on British social media. But the video of the farmer playing music to the cows has particularly caught people’s attention.
Godby said this unusual act may not be the only reason.
“People love cows. They’re beautiful animals. "That's why people are interested in anything related to cows," he said.
He said it was good that such a 'difficult' profession was getting so much attention.
