How are dentures fitted, and how durable are they?
If your teeth are worn, broken, or have gum problems, you may need to have them extracted or have dentures fitted.
There are two types of dentures, temporary removable and permanent fixed, which make chewing and speaking easier.
If your teeth are worn, decayed, broken, or have gum problems, your dental health may deteriorate. This may lead to the need for tooth extraction or dentures.
There may be a problem with broken teeth. In such cases, there is an option to have dentures fitted, which makes chewing, speaking, and smiling easier. There are mainly two types of dentures. Temporary removable and fixed, i.e. permanent.
Types of dentures
Temporary dentures
Dental dentures are chosen according to the condition, number, and needs of the individual. These types of dentures can be removed, cleaned, and reinserted. This is an old option that has been used for a long time.
These are used when there are no teeth left in the mouth. They are placed on the upper and lower jawbones.
Procedure: The dentist measures the mouth, makes a model, and makes a set of teeth out of acrylic. Once it is fitted in the mouth, the person can remove it and put it on. It usually takes 2 to 6 weeks to complete.
These are used when one or more teeth are missing. They are made of acrylic, which is bonded to the remaining teeth.
Procedure: The dentist examines the remaining teeth, measures them, and attaches the teeth with hooks.
These are made from a mixture of metal and acrylic, which is stronger. They are also used when one or more teeth are missing.
Procedure: An impression of the mouth is taken and made in a lab, which is bonded to the remaining teeth.
Permanent dentures
These are fixed inside the mouth, which do not need to be removed. They are more comfortable and natural looking.
Implant retained complete dentures
If there are no complete teeth, the implant is fixed to the upper and lower jawbone by placing titanium screws.
Procedure: The implant is placed surgically, and after healing, the set of teeth is attached. This can be done on the lower and upper roots.
The bridge is attached by slightly trimming the teeth next to the missing teeth.
Procedure: The adjacent teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and the bridge is made in the lab, and fixed with cement. This is suitable if one or more teeth are missing.
Maryland bridge
It is mainly used on the front teeth. When one tooth is missing, the adjacent teeth are not cut and fixed with resin.
Procedure: The bridge is fixed by attaching a metal frame to the adjacent teeth. It is effective only on one tooth, less strong on more teeth.
This is the most modern and popular option.
Procedure
First stage: A titanium screw is surgically placed in the root bone. This is done under local anesthesia.
Second stage: 3 to 6 months of healing time is given, during which the screw is attached to the bone.
Third stage: An abutment ‘connector’ is attached and a crown artificial tooth is placed on top.
This cannot be done in a day or two, it can take 3 to 6 months to complete. Now ‘immediate implants’ are also available, in which a crown can be placed immediately, but this is not suitable for all cases.
How reliable and durable is it?
The durability of artificial teeth depends on the person’s oral health, care and type. Implants are the most reliable, in many people it has been found to last more than 10 years. The success rate is also high. However, how long a denture lasts depends on how well it is cared for.
Which one is better depends on the case. Fixed dentures are preferred because they are comfortable and long-lasting. Sometimes dentures are placed for a short period of time or in cases where fixed dentures cannot be placed. Therefore, you should consult a dentist to determine which dentures to place.
What can be done to prevent tooth loss?
It is better to prevent your teeth from falling out than to put dentures after a tooth has fallen out. For this, you should brush and floss twice a day.
If you have gum and tooth problems, you should treat them immediately. You should eat less sugary and sticky foods and have regular dental checkups, which will not require dentures.
