Why do you suddenly wake up at 3 am? Here's the scientific reason
The problem of waking up at 3 am is linked to the natural fluctuations of the cortisol hormone, and stress increases it.
Many people have trouble waking up suddenly at exactly 3 am or between 3 and 4 am. Some consider it a ghost or an ominous sign, but according to science, it is an important signal related to the body's internal clock and hormones.
If you also frequently wake up at 3 am, you should not take it lightly. This may indicate that your sleep cycle is disrupted and stress has increased in the body.
The main reason for sleep disturbance at this time of night is the natural fluctuations of the cortisol hormone.
Circadian rhythm: Relationship with the body's internal clock
There is an automatic 24-hour clock running inside our body, which is called the circadian rhythm, or biological clock. This clock controls when we sleep, when we wake up, when we eat, and when we are energetic.
This clock is mainly controlled by a part of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. At night, this clock increases the hormone melatonin to induce deep sleep, and in the morning, it increases the hormone cortisol to prepare for awakening.
Cortisol levels start to rise gradually after 2 am. In healthy people, this increase occurs gradually and is in preparation for waking up in the morning. But if you are stressed all day, sleep late at night, or have an irregular lifestyle, this increase in cortisol is excessive and rapid. Therefore, at exactly 3 am, sleep suddenly awakens and it is difficult to fall asleep again.
Cortisol: The role of the stress hormone
Cortisol is often considered a negative hormone, but it is very essential for the body. It plays an important role in energy management, blood pressure control, the immune system, and wakefulness.
Cortisol levels are lowest at midnight. After 2 to 3 am, it starts to rise gradually. Its levels are highest within 30 to 45 minutes after waking up, which is called the cortisol awakening response.
Stress, anxiety, excessive screen time, or irregular eating habits throughout the day can keep cortisol high throughout the night. The natural increase in this hormone at 3 a.m. puts the body into alert mode, increases the heart rate, and pushes it from deep sleep to light sleep. As a result, sleepiness can occur suddenly.
Other causes
This problem is not only related to cortisol. There are other important causes. In the second half of the night: sleep (dreaming stage) is more, which is the lightest stage of sleep. After 3 a.m., the body gradually begins to wake up. At this time, sleep can easily be disrupted by small hormonal changes, a drop in blood sugar, or stress.
When blood sugar drops due to not eating for a long time at night, the body tries to improve by releasing cortisol and adrenaline. This disrupts sleep. In women, hormonal changes after menopause exacerbate this problem.
Mental pressure throughout the day, work pressure, anxiety, and the habit of looking at mobile phones too much at night also cause cortisol to become unbalanced. High room temperature, light or low noise can also help to disrupt sleep.
Practical ways to avoid this
If you have a frequent problem of waking up at 3 am, it can be improved. The most important thing is to adopt a regular and healthy lifestyle.
Try to go to bed before 10 pm and get up at the same time every day. Turn off your mobile, TV and computer at least 1 hour before going to bed because blue light reduces the melatonin hormone.
You can exercise regularly during the day, but only 3 hours before going to bed. Eat a light dinner and 2-3 hours before going to bed. If you have blood sugar problems, you can eat a light protein-rich meal before going to bed.
It is advisable to keep the room cool, dark and quiet. Similarly, it is advisable to make a habit of meditation, yoga, pranayama or journaling to manage stress.

Sometimes health problems like thyroid, diabetes, or sleep apnea can also be the cause.
