Humans gained the power of sight due to a bacterium, scientists reveal
Among the five senses, the function of the eye is to see. The structure of the eye is so complex that even Charles Darwin could not define this organ correctly.
After all, how did the eye, which is considered a very important organ, develop? How did it acquire sight? Scientists have made an important revelation. According to them, all vertebrates, including humans, acquired the ability to see due to a bacterium.
According to scientists, the same bacterium introduced the gene that made the retina of the eye active towards light into our body.
Research on this has recently been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This study was conducted by a team including Ling Zhu, an eye biologist at the University of Sydney, Australia.
According to him, the eyes of vertebrates evolved in a very complex way. It contains a mixture of different types of genes, i.e. genes.
In fact, bacteria change genes very quickly. They attract new genes to themselves. Bacteria also attract genes from viruses. These small pieces of DNA are called transposons.
Transposons can also be called DNA that we float in the air. When the human genome was first sequenced in 2001, it was discovered that 200 genes in the human body came from bacteria. Those bacteria originated in different places.
Matthew Doherty, a biochemist at the University of California, San Diego, and his team studied the genome sequencing of various other species of living things.
According to Doherty, the genes first came from vertebrates and then evolved. And then transferred to different species. The genes are called IRBPs, or interphotoreceptor retinoid binding proteins. This gene gives us the ability to see. Because of this, our eyes adjust to the light outside.
Those genes get more power from vitamin A. The genes produce electrical impulses, or pulses. Due to which the optic nerve works. It took 500 million years for that gene to appear in humans.
Not only humans, but all living beings with the ability to see with their eyes on Earth have this gene in some form or another.
