How does fiber make the stomach feel 'light'?

How does fiber make the stomach feel 'light'? Fiber is a type of carbohydrate—existing in both soluble and insoluble forms—that can help alleviate constipation and promote regular bowel movements. Fiber is a carbohydrate that our digestive system cannot fully digest; consequently, it mostly passes through the digestive tract and is eliminated from the body. This characteristic allows fiber to play a crucial role in the health of the stomach and intestines. There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber mixes with water to form a gel-like substance. It can help slow down digestion, regulate blood sugar levels , and assist in managing cholesterol. Foods such as oats , barley, apples, oranges, beans, and peas contain soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, does not dissolve in water. It adds bulk to the stool and helps it move smoothly through the intestines. Wheat bran , whole grains, certain vegetables, fruit skins, and nuts contain this type of...

How much rice is appropriate to eat in a day?

Depending on physical activity, age, health status, and weight goals, one can consume approximately half a cup to one cup of cooked rice per meal.

Rice is a staple food in Nepali kitchens, cooked almost daily. Many families in Nepal make rice the main component of both their morning and evening meals; for some, a meal doesn't feel complete without it.

Our traditional way of eating involves consuming rice with lentils (dal), vegetables, pickles (achar), and meat. However, with the recent rise in issues like weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and other lifestyle-related ailments, questions have arisen regarding appropriate rice consumption.

How much rice can one eat in a day?

The amount of rice one should eat depends on age, physical activity, health status, and goals regarding weight loss or gain. If you have a healthy weight and lead an active daily life, consuming about one cup of cooked rice per meal is acceptable.

If you are trying to lose weight, half a cup or slightly less—approximately 80 to 100 grams—of cooked rice may be sufficient.

Individuals who engage in strenuous physical activity—such as athletes or manual laborers—require more energy. In such cases, one can consume one cup of rice two to three times a day.

Generally, physically active individuals with a healthy weight can include a balanced amount of rice in their diet. However, for those trying to lose weight or those who are not physically active throughout the day, it is beneficial to reduce rice intake while increasing the consumption of vegetables, lentils, and protein-rich foods. Instead of piling a large mound of rice separately on your plate, a better approach is to allocate about one-quarter of the plate to rice or other starchy foods, half to green and low-starch vegetables, and the remaining quarter to protein-rich foods.

Is it okay to eat rice two or three times a day?

How often one eats rice depends on individual dietary habits and energy requirements. Eating rice twice a day is not inherently problematic; however, the habit of consuming large portions of rice while eating insufficient amounts of vegetables and protein can disrupt nutritional balance.

For instance, rather than eating a large plate filled mostly with rice accompanied by only small amounts of lentils and vegetables, it is better to consume a moderate portion of rice alongside ample lentils, green vegetables, salad, and an appropriate amount of protein-rich food.

Consuming carbohydrates alongside protein, fats, or fiber-rich foods can slow down the rate at which carbohydrates are digested. This helps prevent a rapid spike in blood glucose levels after a meal.

Is rice itself unhealthy?

Rice is a source of carbohydrates, and carbohydrates are a primary source of energy for the body. The issue lies not so much in eating rice itself, but rather in the portion size, the type of rice consumed, and what it is paired with. The World Health Organization also emphasizes balance, variety, and appropriate portion sizes as the foundations of a healthy diet.

White rice or brown rice?

One can consider the type of rice when making a choice. Since the outer layer is removed during the processing of white rice, it contains less fiber compared to brown rice. Brown rice undergoes less processing, allowing it to retain more nutrients, including fiber. The WHO recommends prioritizing whole grains, lentils, fruits, and vegetables over refined foods as sources of carbohydrates. Brown rice is an example of a whole grain.

This does not mean that white rice should be completely avoided. White rice can be consumed if the overall dietary balance is good and the portion size is appropriate. However, it is beneficial to include fiber-rich grains in your diet whenever possible.

How much rice should one eat for weight loss?

The notion that one must completely give up rice to lose weight is incorrect. The key to weight loss is ensuring that energy intake from food does not exceed the body's energy expenditure and improving the overall quality of the diet.

Therefore, one can reduce the portion of rice and replace it with green vegetables, salads, lentils, legumes, eggs, fish, or other protein-rich foods as needed.

Fiber-rich foods help maintain a feeling of fullness for a longer period. Thus, when trying to lose weight, balancing the entire plate is more important than simply cutting down on rice.

Can people with diabetes eat rice?

It is incorrect to say that people with diabetes should not eat rice at all. However, since rice is a source of carbohydrates, one must pay special attention to portion sizes and the overall composition of the meal.

The required amount of carbohydrates varies from person to person among those with diabetes. The appropriate intake depends on factors such as age, weight, physical activity levels, medication, and overall health status. Therefore, it is advisable for individuals with diabetes to determine their rice intake in consultation with a doctor or a dietitian. Instead of filling the majority of your plate with just rice, a useful approach is to allocate half the plate to low-starch vegetables, one-quarter to protein, and one-quarter to carbohydrate-rich foods like rice.

Opting for brown rice or other high-fiber grains is another good choice. However, this does not mean you can eat unlimited amounts of brown rice; portion control remains important.

What should you do if you feel hungry soon after eating rice?

Some people find themselves getting hungry again shortly after consuming a large plate of rice. One reason for this could be a lack of sufficient fiber and protein in the meal.

If a meal consists primarily of rice with very little vegetable, lentil (dal), or protein content, it may not be balanced. Therefore, rather than simply increasing the amount of rice, it is better to include lentils and vegetables... It is beneficial to add items such as vegetables, salads, and protein-rich foods to your meal.

Fiber-rich foods help create a feeling of fullness. The WHO recommends that individuals over the age of 10 aim for a daily intake of at least 25 grams of natural fiber.

What is the right way to eat rice?

You can follow a few simple guidelines to consume rice in a healthy manner. First, instead of piling your plate with rice, increase the portion of vegetables and salad. Second, incorporate fiber-rich grains into your diet whenever possible.

Third, pair rice with lentils, legumes, eggs, fish, or other protein-rich foods. Fourth, cut back on the habit of consuming dishes high in oil, ghee, or fat alongside rice. Fifth, reduce the habit of consuming sugary drinks or very sweet foods with your rice.
